A Word from the Pastor!

My greetings to you and those dear to you. The Patron of our Catholic Church in Burlington, Skagit County, is St. Charles Borromeo. His dates are 1538 to 1584. While still a youth, his uncle gave him the revenue of an Abbacy, which Charles took and donated to the poor. Later towards the end of his life a bubonic plague hit Milan where he was Cardinal Archbishop. Again he made every effort to assist those in dire need.

Following on the Charism of St. Charles, the present Parish has a very vibrant Food Bank, the only one in the city of Burlington.  A lot of people find assistance there.

As you walk into the Parish Church you will see in front of you a Baptismal Font which is built from stones taken from the Skagit River. If Skagit County has one dominant feature, it is the River, a fast flowing one, linking the East and the West of the County.

The designer of the Church wanted the bond between and the Baptismal water and the River recognized. Christian culture seeks to bless the native one.

Another unique feature of the Parish is its outreach to the Hispanic/Latino community. As a farming district, many migrant workers come here for the harvest season. During that time, it is customary for Catholic High School students from neighboring Parishes to come and offer assistance to those people, to ensure that they feel at home. For some years now a Mass has been celebrated at the Migrant Camps. If the people can’t come to Jesus, then Jesus must go to the people.

For many years now the relationship between the American Parishioners and Hispanic/Latino Parishioners has been a harmonious one and I look forward to several more years of living in the embrace of their love.

If you are in the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to drop in.  The welcome mat will be out for you.
